5 Tips to becoming a better coach

  1. Fact or assumption? It's important to know from your coachee the difference between what they know and what they think they know.
  2. Become used to "dead air". Don't feel obligated to fill the space with chatter - rather keep your lips shut and your eyes open.
  3. Always ask open-ended questions. You want to invite reflection and start the discussion.
  4. Help people discover their own insights. Hang in there resisting the impulse to comment or advise - when the A-HA moment comes to the coachee, it will be worthwhile.
  5. Make sure there is take-away "homework" for the client to think about before the next session.
